Rebirthing Breathwork Leonard Orr Started: Where the Lineage Leads Today

Somewhere in the seventies, a handful of people started lying down and breathing in a connected, unbroken rhythm, and discovering that old material (birth, grief, a held-in life) tended to surface on the exhale. That was the beginning of rebirthing breathwork Leonard Orrf helped bring into the world, and if you’ve felt even one session of its descendants, you’ve touched that history whether anyone told you or not. Most people searching for a training today never get told.

Look, the field’s grown. Quickly. And in that growth came programs of wildly different depth, some with decades behind them, some assembled last spring around a clean website and a payment button. They can look identical from the outside — you’d need to ask where the training comes from, who has sat in the room with whom, what was required of the people who graduated. Those aren’t consumer questions. When a client’s nervous system is in your hands, they’re ethical ones.

Why the Seventies Still Matter to Anyone Training Now

Breath Mastery’s practitioner program traces directly to the original breathwork training offered by The Growth Center, Inc. and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 1976 — a university classroom, not a content platform. It meets One Sky International Breathwork Association standards, set in 1990, and it meets Leonard Orr’s Rebirthing Breathwork International standards as well. Then it goes further, exceeding the minimum training requirements of both the International Breathwork Foundation and the Global Professional Breathwork Alliance. Most programs won’t put this plainly. Few can.

Dan Brulé has studied, practised and taught breathwork for more than fifty years, and that figure isn’t decoration. It’s what sits underneath the curriculum: the timing, the restraint, the knowing when a person needs a hand on the shoulder and when they need to be left completely alone with what’s happening. You can’t absorb that from his material by itself. And the community around him has kept gathering for so long that the Cabo Breathwork Gathering is now in its twenty-first year, the sort of number a three-year-old program simply can’t print.

What a Year of Daily Practice Does That a Weekend Can’t

The Breath Mastery certification runs one year, though it’ll bend: six months if you’re moving fast, two years if life says otherwise, and I’d argue that flexibility is what honesty about adult schedules looks like. Home study lives in the Legacy Collection, seven courses and more than 500 lessons in one structured curriculum. Every Tuesday at 2:00pm Eastern there’s a live coaching call, and twice a month you’re in peer mentoring, giving oral and written reports to people who’ll tell you what they actually heard.

Then comes the journal, daily, for at least 180 days. It sounds like homework until you’re ninety days in and the novelty’s gone and what’s left is a page, a pen, and whatever your breath did that morning that you’d rather not have noticed. That’s the point, really. A practitioner who hasn’t spent half a year looking at their own patterns will find, mid-session, that a client’s grief is bumping up against something in themselves they haven’t yet…

So here’s the question worth sitting with. What does it mean to build a professional life on a training whose roots go back to 1976 and whose standards were set in 1990, compared with one designed three years ago to meet a wave of demand? I don’t ask that to be dramatic. Among all the breathwork certification programs now competing for your attention, the real differences are the ones you can’t see on a landing page — what was required, who was watching, and what happened to people after they finished.

Sitting With Real Clients Before You Carry the Title

Before you facilitate anyone, you receive. At least ten personal Conscious Connected Breathing sessions with an approved breathworker, and there’s a gulf between reading about a session and lying inside one, the kind of gulf that changes how you hold the next person. Then you facilitate at least twenty-five one-on-one sessions and write up each one before you graduate (and once you’ve sat with a client in a full session — all that unpredictability, the release, the long stretches of profound stillness — you understand why twenty-five isn’t an obstacle, it’s the only honest minimum). Holding that space isn’t coaching. It isn’t therapy either, though it borrows from both.

Nobody can read their way into twenty-five sessions.

A Week in the Room, and Eight Ways of Working

There’s also the week: a minimum of one full week of live, in-person training with Dan. People ask why a mostly online program requires it, and the answer’s simple enough — some things are transmitted, not taught, and they only travel when you’re breathing in the same room. Self-paced courses never ask you to cross that threshold. This one does, because the training also covers trauma-aware facilitation, session intervention techniques and dysfunctional breathing assessment, skills that live in the hands and the attention more than in notes.

And the range is real. Rebirthing, Transformational Breathing, Holotropic Breathwork, Vivation, Wim Hof, Buteyko, Conscious Connected Breathing, Kundalini and Prana Yoga: eight methods, so a graduate can serve more than one kind of client, not just the kind their single technique happens to suit. Alongside them sit respiratory anatomy, spiritual psychology, group dynamics, and topics most programs wouldn’t print, like Death Urge and Physical Immortality, Birth Trauma and Womb Consciousness. Plus the Business of Breathwork, because transformation alone doesn’t build a practice that lasts.

What It Costs, and What Comes After

Tuition is $7,560 — one payment, three of $2,600, or six of $1,350 — listed openly, which says something about a program that doesn’t hide its number behind a sales call. The Tuesday calls carry on after the exam; certification here is a beginning. If you’re deciding, I’d say only this: whose training you carry is one of the most important professional choices you’ll make, and a year’s honesty serves it better than a weekend’s. FAQ

Is the Breath Mastery program connected to the rebirthing tradition, or is rebirthing just one method among many?
Both. Rebirthing is one of the eight methods taught, and the program meets Leonard Orr’s Rebirthing Breathwork International standards. Its lineage also runs back to the 1976 Growth Center and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth training.

How do I know this breathwork practitioner certification is respected by the wider professional community?
It meets One Sky International Breathwork Association standards (established 1990) and exceeds the minimum training requirements of both the IBF and the GPBA.

Why would an online breathwork certification require a week in person?
Home study and live calls build knowledge, but a minimum of one full week with Dan is where direct transmission happens, and no self-paced course can replicate that.

Can I manage $7,560 for a breathwork coach certification without paying it all at once?
There are three options: one payment of $7,560, three of $2,600, or six of $1,350. The program can also be accelerated to six months or extended to two years if your schedule needs it.
